What’s the easiest way to make friends on a day with temps in the upper 90′s and humidity off the chart? Hand out cold drinks and food of course.
South Orange Rescue Squad’s Rehab Support Service was busier than usual on June 30th when major wrecks on both I-85 and I-40 shut down those highways for nearly 12 hours.
Both north and south bound lanes of I-85 near mile marker 165 were closed while fire and law enforcement handled two separate wrecks that included cement mixer drums, several passenger cars, a tanker truck and a tractor-trailer.
No more than an hour after clearing from I-85, South Orange responded to a multi-vehicle wreck on I-40 and 15-501. Because of the 3 fatalities, the west bound lanes of I-40 remained closed until 10:30pm. South Orange kept the firefighters from New Hope FD, Durham FD Chapel Hill FD, Hillsborough FD; the NC SHP troopers, the Durham police officers, and the DOT workers hydrated, feed and as cool as possible with misting fans, ice packs, and cooling chairs.
